This Is Really Starting To Take The Piss.

First we get Rob Zombie re-making the incredible John Carpenter's "Halloween". Then I hear that Warner Brothers is planning to remake the fantastic Bruce Lee classic "Enter The Dragon". Now we have Tony Scott "re-imagining" the incredible "Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3".

Now don't get me wrong I'm not a Tony Scott hater I think he has made some great films throughout his career. I'm probably one of the biggest "Beverly Hills Cop 2" fans in the world. "Last Boy Scout", "True Romance" and "Enemy Of The State" are all brilliant, "Domino" and "Deja Vu" not so much. Tony Scott is also directing the re-make of "The Warriors". The point I'm trying to make is that all of these movies are of their time and this is what makes them great.

Do we really need anymore re-makes with "nu-metal" soundtracks?

Whats next? "The 'Burbs"?, "The Goonies"?, "The Lost Boys"?

Currently burrowing it's way into my brain....

You know how some songs work their way into your frontal lobe and refuse to let go?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the wonderful M.I.A. with Jimmy.
I still can't work out whether this is trash or genius.

However, her track $20 is genius (You Tube link). Chanting / Rapping over what sounds suspiciously like slowed down New Order, before inexplicably breaking into the chorus of the Pixies' 'Where is my Mind?' and all the way through random Arabic chanting and dropped beats litter the track.

(God, the other contributors on this are going to hate this so very much, let the slagging off begin.............)

The Boys by Garth Ennis

Latest PROPAGANDA review over at FPI weblog is online.

As far as I’m concerned this is Garth Ennis’ big comeback – he’s either coasting (if you’re being charitable) or lacking ideas since coming up with Preacher over 12 years ago now. Everything he’s done in the intervening years has been either a Preacher clone (Punisher?) or pretty crap (Wormwood?). I’m beginning to think that even Ennis was starting to believe this, as he was often quoted as saying that “The Boys will out-Preacher Preacher”. The Boys, I’m really pleased to be able to tell you, is the first really decent thing I think that he’s written since Preacher. I know a lot of you will point to the excessive comedic violence, the crudity, the sick jokes and the abundance of bodily fluids and claim it’s yet another Preacher rip-off. But even if it is a Preacher clone, it’s the best bloody Preacher clone anyone’s come up with since, well, Preacher.

Bob Mould " If I Can't Change Your Mind"

Taken from his forthcoming DVD "Circle Of Friends - Live At The 9:30 Club"

30 Days Of Night Movie Poster

"Gone Baby Gone" Trailer

Directed by Ben Affleck. Based on the Novel by Dennis Lehane. Say what you like about Afflecks acting ability, but this looks damn good.

Two Films I Probably Won't Get To See At The Cinema

"I want someone to eat cheese with"
Written, directed and starring Jeff Garlin of "Curb your enthusiasm" fame, this looks like it could be not your average romantic comedy.

"Lars and the real girl"
Again another movie that looks like it has romantic comedy elements but will hopefully avoid all the cliches that come with them. Starring the fantastic Ryan Gosling who seems to be dipping his fingers into a lot of independent pies lately.

After Seven Years Of Writing It......

Garth Ennis is leaving The Punisher. And it's about bloody time too. He's been writing the fucking book about six years too long as it is. For me the best work he did was "Welcome Back Frank" with Steve Dillon. It's the only Punisher book you will ever need to own.

Paul Popes "Invisible Man"

Read The New Daniel Clowes Comic For Free

Read Part One of Mr Wonderful here.
www.nytimes.com/ref/magazine/funnypages
And then read a new strip every Sunday until January 20Th 2008. It's good stuff and how cool is it that a newspaper does stuff like this. What do we get in our Sunday Rags what some Cunt out of Big Brother did this week.

The The - Infected.

Matt Johnson's The The.
One of my favourite bands of all time.
The Infected album was made with an accompanying video reel, and as far as I know the 8 track movie has only ever been released on video.
But now we have YouTube and all is good.

Warren Ellis - Crecy

Warren Ellis' historical graphic novel. One of the best things he's written in a long time.
Full of all the bile and nastiness you've come to expect from Warren. The whole thing is presented as a first person lecture with one of the English longbowmen talking directly to you, the 21st Century reader. And whilst other writers might have completely fucked it up and bored the arse of you, Ellis keeps the whole thing moving and still manages to educate whilst entertaining.

Full review at some point over at PROPAGANDA at the FPI weblog or on the Fictions weblog, but for now, a scene setter: Page 1 dialogue......

“This is a story about the English and the French and why the English hate the French.
Which is because they eat frogs, they smell bad, and they’re twenty five miles away”

“I am, of course, a complete bloody xenophobe who comes from a time when it was acceptable to treat people in the next village like they were subhumans. On the other hand, the French make sausages out of horse’s arseholes and have a history of using England as their toilet.”

“So we call the French snail-eating cunts and they can fucking like it.
There’s a word you’ll have to get used to. Cunt. This is a word that many people do not like. But you have to understand the English.
In England, the word cunt is punctuation.”

Marty Funkhauser - porn star name and a website to match.....

Methinks Marty has been moonlighting again in his role as cut price male porn star. How else do we explain his other blog suddenly becomming a den of sinning and naked flesh?

Unless...... Rich, you've gone and deleted your blog haven't you?
I'm not going to direct link to the bastards, but google buildingabettergeek and see for yourselves what the little monkeys have been up to.

Must review something soon. Although I could just review Rich's, sorry, Marty's old weblog. That would be nice.

Jonah Matranga "Not About A Girl Or A Place"

Picked up the Album yesterday, review soon.

My Comic Of 2007 : Green Arrow Year One

A modern update of Green Arrows origin By Andy Diggle(Hellblazer/Gamekeeper/The Losers) & Jock(Faker/The Losers). I'm a massive Green Arrow/Oliver Queen fan and this little beauty just ticks every box on the origin checklist, without ever getting caught up in cliches or being cheesy. I'll post a full review when the series ends, but for now go to your local comic shop pick up the issues and enjoy.

Queer Arrow ?

A very disturbing picture of Green Arrow i just found online.

The N & C Audio/Visual Club

Tonights Movie : Disturbia

THE Comic book of 2007?
Fuck off.
A review.*

It wasn't even the comic book of the bloody week it was published.
(That was probably Y The Last Man. But Love & Rockets was out in the same week as well so that puts this into an easy 3rd.)

But despite being no more than a flaccid little story designed to inject a little temporary chaos into the Marvel Universe, Mark Millar's Civil War #1 has just been voted the comic of the year 2007 by the Harvey Awards. Despite usually avoiding the big crossovers, I actually looked at this one. It had all those classic symptoms of being written to order. I imagine someone tossed Mark Millar a brief to do a big crossover and he let loose with what is, effectively, a Cap vs Iron Man slap fest with a little added teenage politicing.

No I didn't like it, why do you ask?

Now what's that spinning noise coming out of Harvey Kurtzman's grave?

* Actually this review could have simply consisted of the picture, a tag line of 2007 best single issue and "fuck off" written over and over.

Laura Howell

Just posted this post on the FPI weblog in my Propaganda reviews section. Go look.
It's all about Laura Howell, currently working on Hunt Emerson's Ratz strip in the Beano, One look, no matter how fleeting at her website will show you she's incredibly talented and well worth a couple of hours bowsing time.

(Above: panel from the Bizarre Adventures of Gilbert & Sullivan by Laura Howell.)

Bugger it, I should really write something for this shouldn't I.....

This is what happens when you say yes to things without thinking.
Dear old friend Rich Nunn, strangely pseudonyming as Marty Funkhauser for god knows what reason (particularly when the blog address is richnunnspissandvinegar), invited me along to contribute.
And I said yes.
Of course, that's in addition to doing my own wonder blog Fictions, doing the PROPAGANDA reviews at the FPI blog, real paying work, a teaching assistant course and generally being a good dad. Is it any wonder there is no sleep involved in my life?

So, now I'm here what the hell am I going to talk about?
No doubt there will be comic reviews. Maybe some TV. Films. Books.
Or maybe not. Maybe I'll start reviewing everything.
Maybe that bowl of crunchy nut cornflakes really needs a review. Maybe it needs eating. Who knows.
I'm not promising anything - you can't make me do anything dammit.

(unless you pay me - then your imagination is your only limit).

Californication

Channel 5 will premiere Californication on October 11th.

David Duchovny returns to television for the first time since The X-Files in this new show.

Plastic Fantastic By Frank Cho

Only a man like Frank Cho could come up with an idea like this.

Scott Ian Plays Guitar Hero 2

Scott's band Anthrax has a song on Guitar Hero 2. A song that he helped write.

How bad does he suck at that !!!

John Rambo Trailer

Oh my god !!!!!

And you thought that the Rambo movies would have a dignified end like Rocky. The worst thing is I'm going to have to go and see this sucker at the cinema.

Adi Gravnovs Iron Man

There really is something about Gravnov's Artwork. The level of detail which he brings to the page is stunning. To see more of his artwork check out the "Iron Man-Extremis" Graphic Novel which is written by Warren Ellis.

Chiodos "The Words 'Best Friend' Become Redefined"

I only discovered this Band last night. I'm not really sure how you would classify their Music(which is a good thing) but i like it a lot. If you can then please send your answers on a postcard.

Music : September

Here's a couple of new Albums coming out this month that I'll be checking out.

Jonah Matranga "And" (Xtra Mile)

Debut solo album from the man behind Far, Onelinedrawing, New End Original & Gratitude.

Mustard Plug "In Black And White" (Hopeless)

16 Years and still going strong. The Ska-Core legends are back and better than ever.

Look out for reviews soon.

Southland Tales Poster

Here is the rather nice one sheet poster for Richard Kelly's long awaited follow up to Donnie Darko.

Talib Kweli - Listen

From one of the three Hip-Hop albums making the rounds on my iPod at the moment. Talib Kweli's track "Listen" taken from his third and most recent album "Eardrum". The track seems to be not only a verbal attack on the state of modern Hip-Hop music but some of the attitudes that come with it. Not only a brilliant track but a fantastic video with some unusual visual elements.

Upcoming Reviews

"Batman: Ego and Other Tails" by Darwyn Cooke

"Silverfish" by David Lapham

I'm having both of these Books from my Wonderful Wife for my 33rd Birthday which is on Thursday. Expect reviews as soon as possible.

Circa Survive "Act Appalled"

Take from their second album "On Letting Go"(Equal Vision Records) Which is a masterpiece of Psychedelic Post Hardcore Prog.

Matt Wagners Zorro

A wonderful piece by Comics Legend Matt Wagner. Dynamite Comics has the licence for a brand new Zorro comic, with Wagner on board as Writer & Art Director for the series. This will be something to keep an eye on over the next few months.

Iron Man Trailer

This looks fantastic. Robert Downey Jr is perfectly cast as Tony Stark. And you can tell that Stan Winston designed the modern Iron Man Armor. I think this is a very strong start for Marvel Studios. Next May can't come quick enough.

Welcome To The Show

Welcome to Piss 'N' Vinegar a brand new Review Blog. Our reviewing system is a simple one. If we like something or if we hate something then we talk about it. Now lets get stuck in.
